Halloween themed shoes are nothing new, with proposals from the past having celebrated the holiday of October 31 via various costumes. In recent years, spooky-inspired collections have been accompanied by capsules dedicated to the Día de Muertos event celebrated in Mexico and elsewhere, giving fans of festive sneakers even more goodies to choose from.
Some themed designs from the past lean heavily on the colors most often associated with Halloween: bright orange, playful purple, and creepy black. Others have made holiday protagonists – Jack-o’-lanterns, ghouls, witches, mummies and more – center stage. Brands like Vans, Reebok and Le Coq Sportif have even brought some of the most recognizable horror movie figures into sneaker form through collaborations with the Jason Voorhees, Freddy Krueger or It franchises.
Although most of the best Halloween sneakers were designed for casual wear, some styles have emerged in the realm of modern performance sport. LeBron James, a staunch supporter of the horror movie genre, has outfitted pairs from his signature sneaker series in gory costumes for the spookiest dates of the year (including Friday the 13th). Nike SB has repeatedly reinvented the Nike Dunk through the lens of Halloween and the November 2 “Day of the Dead,” resulting in some of the most famous festive designs of any holiday.
