The Mater Academy Charter School women’s volleyball team won their second consecutive state championship.

The Lions (26-7) defeated Ponte Vedra 25-22, 26-24, 25-20 in the FHSAA Class 6A Final at Suncoast Credit Union Arena in Fort Myers.

The Sharks, who were ranked No.2 in the MaxPreps national standings, had not lost a best-of-5 game since 2018. They finished the season 29-2.

It was a very impressive race for Mater Academy Charter. The Lions haven’t lost a set in the playoffs.

They beat (Sarasota) Riverdale in the State Semifinals 25-15, 25-17, 25-19. To reach state, they won the regional title with a 25-22, 25-18, 25-23 victory over St. Thomas Aquinas.

To qualify for the regional final, Mater Academy Charter beat Martin County and Lourdes, each also in three sets.

The Lions finished the season not only with another state championship, but with a nine-game winning streak and 13 of the last 14.

State champions are Alanis Molina, Camila Villar, Gabriela Gonzalez-Abreu, Jada Constanza, Taylor Pagan, Melanie Vasquez, Amaya Roberson, Aiko Helper, Angeles Alderete, Orian Drore, Angelica Ortiz, Victoria Vinals, Elaisa Villar, Alanis Johnson .

The head coach is Elsa Lopez and the assistant coach is Nicole Lopez.

Class 3A

The Westminster Christian School playoffs ended in the State Finals also at Suncoast Credit Union Arena.

In a Battle of Warriors, (Clearwater) Calvary Christian defeated Westminster Christian 25-21, 25-20, 25-21.

State champion Calvary finished his season 28-4; Westminster State runner-up Christian 26-6.

The 44th version, partially sponsored by Under Armor and BSN Sports, features solid ground including West Palm Beach-Berean Christian, Cardinal Gibbons, Highlands Christian, Jupiter Christian, Pine Crest, Boca Raton-Saint John Paul II, Boca Raton-St Andrew’s, Saint Thomas Aquinas.
