A limited-edition pair of Nike Air Max 97s created as part of a charity collaboration with rapper Eminem have gone on sale for $50,000 in a rare market appearance.
The rare Nike Eminem Air Max 97 ‘Shady Records’ are men’s size 10 US and feature a brown, orange and blue color scheme with a rounded toe and leather detailing, and were listed on The RealReal on Tuesday.
A message along the shoe’s toe box – printed to look like a marker scribble – reads “D-12 and Big Proof 4 ever!” a nod to the Detroit hip-hop group Emininem co-founded in 1995 and DeShaun Dupree Holton, Eminem’s childhood friend and fellow rapper who was shot and killed the year of the release trainers.
Just eight pairs of Eminem’s Nike Air Max 97s were released in 2006, part of a charity series the rapper produced with Nike, his all-time favorite shoe brand.
Proceeds from the original sales of the sneakers went to the Marshall Mathers Foundation, established to help underprivileged youth in the Detroit area, and the United Nations Campaign to Help Refugee Children.
Another pair of shoes, a size 9 for men, went on sale in 2017 by a Parisian seller who listed the shoes for around $7,000.
The RealReal notes in the listing that the shoes are “importable” due to their age and are meant to be collected, but a new pair of plain white Nike Air Max 97s retails for just $175 on Nike’s website.
“This pair of Slim Shady is unique because it was one of the first examples of a celebrity collaboration, before it was a widely used concept,” said The RealReal sneaker and streetwear expert Sean Conway. Forbes in a report. “These days, celebrity influence and the rise of social media play a huge role in a sneaker’s success, so we’re thrilled to shed some light on such a throwback piece.”
This year marks the 25th anniversary of the first release of the Nike Air Max 97. Since then, the shoes have been a mainstay and even recently featured in a Comme des Garçons Homme Plus high fashion show. The late designer Virgil Abloh put his own spin on the silhouette as part of his Off-White brand’s collaborations with Nike.
Eminem has collaborated with Nike on more than a dozen shoe drops since their first partnership in 2003, eight of which were part of the charity series. “If people want to pay a ridiculous amount of money for shoes…we’ll just donate it to charity,” Eminem said during a 2017 appearance of Complexfrom the “Sneaker Shopping” online series. Most recently, Eminem teamed up with Nike for the custom Air Jordan 3 “Air Shady” PEs worn by the rapper during his Super Bowl halftime show in February.
