Waraire Boswell was going about his business in Niketown one afternoon some 15 years ago, when, out of nowhere, a young man approached him to discuss his shoes. “‘Hi brother. You from nursery? Chicago?’ Boswell remembers asking him. “No, I’m from LA,” Boswell replied. “He’s like, ‘Bro, how do you put it? [your look] together is just beautiful. I am looking to make my own line. Can you come meet me at the W? ‘”
Even before the chart-topping albums and jaw-dropping charades, Kanye West always pursued what he wanted.
The shoe store break-in happened just as “Through the Wire” started appearing on the radio, so we’re talking late 2003, early 2004. Boswell finally ended up in LA, where he met. the rapper then in full swing in a hotel near the UCLA campus. He thought the chance encounter might lead to something a little more tangible. Perhaps a small role in the making of West College dropout clothing line a reality. Maybe a great design partnership.
But life – and music’s fame – stepped in. “It was already bubbling and [his popularity was] increasing at a rate that resembled that of a rocket, ”says Boswell. “What finally happened was he was like, ‘You know, I have a few things to do, blah, blah, blah. ‘ So what we initially talked about ultimately didn’t come to pass. “
Boswell is not bitter, however. Why would it be? The Los Angeles-based designer has gone on to dress NFL stars, stylish covers for GQ and partners with Glenfiddich Whiskey for a contemporary clothing line, The New Standard. And he wants that success to be replicated for West, who is on the cusp of something huge with Yeezy Gap, a partnership with the iconic fashion label that was announced in the summer of 2020 and which would debut this fall. .
Fans got a first taste over the summer when Gap dropped a pre-order link for Yeezy Gap’s “Round Jacket” – a sort of hybrid-puffer / bomber jacket with a sleek finish from lacquer style. This week, a Yeezy x Gap hoodie appeared on the retailer’s website without warning – or fanfare. It sold out in less than 24 hours.
If you’ve been following West’s fashion journey long enough, you might have guessed that something like this was inevitable.
“Back when he was rapping, he was talking about the pink polo shirt with the pop-up collar,” says Fresh, the LA designer behind Rich Fresh, a brand specializing in custom suits that we’ve seen on everyone, from John Legend to Cedric the Entertainer. “How many guys from the street [do] do you see a Polo rocking like that? Fee request. “It was just one thing. And he’s always been on the limit. Usually he does some crazy bullshit when people say it’s not cool. It just holds on long enough until they say, ‘Oh, that’s really cool.’ “
Five years after interacting with Niketown, West, then a household name, bonded with the Swoosh brand for real business. His Nike Air Yeezy and Yeezy 2 sneakers were instant hits (as of this writing, they’re aiming for five digits on resale sites). From there, Kanye moved on to adidas, where he had a fabulous sneaker run. His adidas Yeezy Boost V2 and Yeezy 500, released in ’16 and ’17 respectively, are still winning public approvals. He branched out with a full Yeezy Season clothing line, orchestrated elaborate fashion shows in the middle of the parks, and had Kylie Jenner pose for nude bodystockings. The streets and social media sites couldn’t stop talking about the dude and the design moves he was making.
Even today, many in the fashion industry are sitting on pins and needles in anticipation of Yeezy Gap. “I think it’s going to give people access to Kanye’s mind, but at a reasonable price,” Fresh says. “They are going to go crazy. The resale market is also going to go crazy. Gap has never sold any product in its history [on the secondary market]Adds Fresh. “They’ve never seen someone walk into the Gap, buy a t-shirt and then sell it on the open market for 10 times more – that will be their new reality.”
Fresh never worked directly with West, but he says some of his clothes were used in a few videos of Ye. “I didn’t meet Kanye personally,” he says, “but I was connected with his stylist [and] I know people he works with on Yeezy’s side. It’s like two degrees of separation, ”says Fresh; “Hell, really one.”
Those who have worked intimately with the 44-year-old West say fashion even seeps into its creative process. Fivio Foreign, a rapper featured on West’s latest album, Donda, told LA Power 106 radio station that while recording, “[Kanye] made us all wear Donda merchandise. He gave everyone Yeezys [and we wore] black cargoes and Donda shirts. I guess it takes the egos away.
Oddly enough, the first drop of Yeezy Gap’s product speaks directly to the ego. The bubble jacket without zipper is for the confident consumer. Its bulbous shape and bright colors make it a must-have for your wardrobe. After West wore it several times to Donda listening sessions, Gap opened presales for a $ 200 blue jacket. It sold out within hours. Soon after, a black version was released in Europe and Asia. Same results – mass hysteria in the west (the jacket currently sells for over $ 600 on resale sites like StockX).
“He’s an architect, similar to Imhotep,” says Atlanta designer Daryl Mapp, comparing the rapper to the great Egyptian mathematician. “Be able to have the vision and the drive to perform at the highest level in any capacity [is impressive]. His vision is distorted but it is clear. It’s distorted because it totally contradicts what we’re seeing right now. This is the only reason that is distorted. But for him it’s clear, ”says Mapp. “Then he finds the right people to perform it with the highest abilities or abilities. “
The second version of West and Gap, the Yeezy Gap hoodie, made a cameo appearance on the main Gap site on September 28. All traces of the six-color set are now gone. The only thing left on the sparse Yeezy Gap site is a form asking consumers for their name, email address, and clothing sizes.
Rolling stone has contacted Gap a few times to confirm the release date of the next Yeezy Gap product and for more details on the collaboration. Unfortunately, our emails never received a response.
But all the ambiguity makes sense; plays directly into West’s mysterious behavior. The questions only add to the buzz. And that’s the really fascinating part of it all – no one knows what to expect with Yeezy Gap. Based on what we know about West’s fashion evolution (and what we’ve seen of the bubble coat), we can assume that irregular cut outerwear, jogging pants in cotton and head-turning hues could shape the collection. Beyond that, not many people know what is going to come up at the mall.
“I have no expectations,” says Mapp, whose Melrose High clothing line is causing a stir with its vibrant patterns and soft fabrics. “Even when you think it’s one way, [Kanye] spins and gives you full experience. I love that he found one of the best American brands and decided to add his point of view to it, ”says Mapp. “I’m still rooted for what he does. It sets a new standard for creation.
“As a consumer, if you look at the fashion landscape and think, ‘Everything that I love and have become familiar with is due to one person’, you have to respect that person, not isn’t it? Boswell asks, redundantly. “What [Kanye] fact, to which he subscribes politically, that is none of my business, ”notes Boswell. “I don’t want to know about it. That being said, I am a man creative enough to understand that his influence on fashion is undeniable.
This seems to be the consensus in the fashion world – everyone apparently wants Kanye West to win. No matter his political opinions, no matter how famous he is on reality TV, no matter how much Billboard argue with Drake, people respect his spirit and want Yeezy Gap, and all the other fashion projects he does, to flourish.
“It’s going to sell,” Rich Fresh says. “It’s already done; it’s not even a question. He’s at the point where he’s going to sell – and not in a negative way. His product is going to sell, no matter what. He could make a baseball cap. brimless, it’s gonna sell. He influences culture in a different way. And people are always eager to see what the mad genius has up his sleeve.
