Editor’s notes: It’s hard to argue that ’90s, early ’00s and ’90s inspired sneaker silhouettes are some of the biggest and best of all time. All you need to do is take a quick look at the styles that have proven to be the most popular and desirable for consumers and brand collaborators over the past few years to see this truth in motion.
Whether it’s Martine Rose, Supreme or Skepta diving into the Shox wholeheartedly, or ‘Preme on the Tailwind, Air Max Plus (TNs) or Air Streak Spectrum Plus, it’s clear that we collectively share a history of love with a very specific era of Nike. Rightly so, because I would go so far as to say that it is the most emblematic of the brand.
Well, if you’re okay with it, Nike’s newcomer might just be the one for you. Capitalizing on the success of the aforementioned Tailwind, which first landed in the late ’70s before being returned and refined throughout the ’90s, the Air Max TW isn’t just an evolution of a assertive style, but a marriage of design details from beloved moments of the era.
Built as an ode to the past, the Cherry Air Max TW picks, mixes and twists elements from previous entries in the Nike archives. While not all references scattered across the silhouette (especially the upper) are identical, inspiration from the Tailwind IV, Tailwind III, Tailwind 96 and Air Max 270 React ENG can be seen.
Perhaps the most striking detail of this new style is the chevron pattern that runs across the upper with a grainy texture that is mimicked underneath itself, creating TN-like veining. Speaking of TN, the sneaker’s tongue branding is certainly reminiscent of the Air Max Plus and Zoom series, though the font used is totally unique for both.
For its debut, the sneaker is decked out in a retro palette of white, blue and yellow, making it a perfect newcomer for the warmer months.
