The Aphex sneaker by Eytys is anything but minimalist
Release date: October 6 at 10 a.m. CET
To buy: In store and online on the Eytys website
Editor’s Notes: The new sneaker from Eytys knows how to party.
The Aphex, a mid-rise silhouette inspired by basketball shoes, is entirely maximalist.
In “Twilight,” the sneaker features purple zebra panels with touches of black mesh and smooth nubuck. A square toe is a nod to Eytys’ signature thick shape, the focal point of the brand’s spring / summer 2022 collection. A studded outsole wraps around the heel and forefoot, reminiscent of the Fugu and Kamasu, two older Eytys silhouettes.
A second color, “Mamba”, replaces the zebra print with a silver snakeskin (false, of course). Bright white accents reflect the flash, adding extra shine to the design that is impossible to miss.
Eytys, a Swedish brand, seems to give up any notion of Scandinavian minimalism with the Aphex. Instead, the sneaker serves up a cornucopia of design elements that somehow all work together: animal print, metallic, texture, shape. It’s a shoe that would feel right at home at the foot of, say, Joe Exotic.
On Instagram, Eytys described the shoe as a “dynamic upgrade to the mid-high shoes of the millennium.” Indeed, it brings a bit of the ’80s and a hint of the’ 90s to the present day, a far cry from the muted Mother sneakers that introduced the brand to the world a decade ago.
